FEATURING SMES IN UPCOMING OCC REPORT
The OCC is preparing a short report that examines the important role that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play in Ontario's economy.?Further, the report will include case studies of local businesses who have:
-
adapted their regular operations to produce essential items (ex. hand sanitizer, masks, etc.);
-
began developing entirely new products/services to remain resilient; or
-
changed the way they serve customers (ex. using or strengthening their e-commerce platforms to reach consumers at home).

Key Updates

|
GOVERNMENT OF CANADA
- Today, the federal government announced that businesses will be able to apply for the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy program beginning next Monday, April 27. Businesses are able to visit the CRA website now to calculate how much they're eligible for. Also announced was an investment of $350 million to support vulnerable Canadians through charities and non-profit organizations that deliver essential services.
- On April 18, 2020, the government announced $20-million in funding through the COVID-19 Rapid Research Fund. The funding is intended to advance medical research and develop tools and resources to combat COVID-19. Also announced was up to $306.8 million in funding to help small and medium-sized Indigenous businesses, and to support Aboriginal Financial Institutions that offer financing to these businesses.
- On April 17 the Government of Canada announced new actions to protect Canadian jobs and provide $1.7 billion to support businesses and organizations dealing with the economic impacts of COVID-19. These new supports are available to those unable to access existing supports including startups, rural businesses and communities, culture, heritage and sports organizations as well as young entrepreneurs. The government also introduced new measures to help retain and create approximately 10,000 well-paying jobs in the Canadian energy sector.
GOVERNMENT OF ONTARIO
- On April 20, the Ontario Government released updated COVID-19 modeling, showing that the public health measures put in place, including staying home and physically distancing from each other, are working to contain the spread of the virus.
- On April 17, the Ontario government announced its partnership with Rogers and Apple to make learning more accessible. This will help with the disproportionate impacts the COVID-19 crisis is having on communities in every corner of the province.
- On April 16, the Ontario government announced an amendment to the Insurance Act enabling auto insurance companies to provide temporary insurance premium rebates to drivers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
